Understanding a fine notice
Last updated: October 2026
You were speeding or parked in the wrong place, and now a fine notice (Bußgeldbescheid) arrives. It says what you are accused of, how much you should pay and by when you can object.
Sample letter
Kastanienweg 11
12345 Musterstadt
Bußgeldbescheid
Sehr geehrter Herr Beispiel,

Made‑up sender, made‑up names. The letter often looks like this or similar.
What does the letter mean?
The authority says: you committed a minor offence (Ordnungswidrigkeit), in the sample driving too fast in town. For this you should pay a fine, plus fees.
A hearing form (Anhörungsbogen) is something different. It usually comes first and asks who was driving. You must give your personal details, but not say anything about the accusation itself. The fine notice is then the decision.
From a fine of 60 euros there are usually points in Flensburg. In the notice this is called an entry in the driving aptitude register (Fahreignungsregister).
Deadlines
- 2 weeks from service for the objection (Einspruch). The date of service is usually on the yellow envelope. Keep it. The deadline in your own notice is what counts.
- If you do not object, the notice becomes final. After that you still have the payment deadline from the letter, in the sample 2 weeks.
- If you cannot pay all at once, ask the fine office (Bußgeldstelle) about instalments before the deadline ends.
What you can do
- Check the details: date, place, number plate. Were you even driving?
- If everything is correct, pay the amount with the file number (Aktenzeichen) as the payment reference.
- If you think the accusation is wrong, you can object. A short objection saying "reasons to follow" (Begründung folgt) keeps the deadline.
- After an objection, the case can go to court and there can be more costs. Get advice first, for example at a consumer advice centre or from a lawyer for traffic law.
- Keep the notice and a copy of your objection.
This guide does not replace legal advice. Every letter is different: deadlines and amounts apply as they are written in your letter. If you have questions, an advice centre can help.
