Terms of use
Last updated: 13 October 2026
1. Provider and scope
The app “Brief verstanden” (Letter Explained) is provided by Marcin Weber, Kirschgartenstraße 27, 67146 Deidesheim, Germany (e-mail: hallo@briefverstanden.app). These terms apply to the use of the app. In addition, Apple's standard licence agreement for apps applies (Apple Standard EULA). If the two conflict, these terms take precedence as far as Apple permits.
2. What the app does
Brief verstanden explains letters, e-mails and messages (for example WhatsApp or text messages) that you photograph, select as a screenshot or paste as text. The app summarises the content in simple language, lists next steps, deadlines and amounts, explains difficult words, warns about possible scams and can draft a reply letter. The explanations are created with artificial intelligence (Claude by Anthropic).
3. Not legal advice
The app is a tool to help you understand. It does not replace legal, tax or debt advice and does not legally assess individual cases. For appeals, objections, cancellations, court proceedings, large amounts or whenever a lot is at stake for you, please contact an advice centre (for example a consumer advice centre, migration advice service or debt counselling) or a lawyer.
4. Artificial intelligence can make mistakes
We take great care, but AI can misread text, calculate deadlines incorrectly or misunderstand things. Always check important details such as dates, deadlines, amounts, reference numbers and account numbers in the original. Reply drafts are suggestions: read them before sending and complete the marked parts. The scam warning is an assessment and not a guarantee that a message is genuine or fake.
5. Your obligations
- Only send content you are allowed to use, for example your own mail or mail of someone you are helping with their permission.
- Do not use the app for unlawful purposes and do not try to disrupt or overload it or get around its limits.
- The app may refuse content that it cannot or may not explain.
6. Free explanations and fair use
To get started you receive 5 free explanations, then 1 explanation per calendar month. The scam check is free. Unused free explanations do not carry over to the next month. The free offer is voluntary; we may change it for the future. To prevent abuse, we may limit unusually heavy use, including with Plus. With normal use you will not notice this.
7. Purchases and subscriptions
- Purchases and subscriptions are handled exclusively through Apple's App Store. Apple's terms apply, including the Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement (EULA).
- Plus (monthly or yearly) and Family (monthly) are subscriptions. They renew automatically for the same period unless you cancel them in your Apple account settings at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Payment is charged to your Apple account when you confirm the purchase or renewal.
- Family can be used by up to 6 people through Apple Family Sharing.
- The 10-pack is a one-time purchase without a subscription. The 10 explanations do not expire. They are valid on the device on which the pack was redeemed and cannot be transferred to another device.
- Refunds are requested from Apple (reportaproblem.apple.com). Your statutory rights remain unaffected.
8. Availability and changes to the app
We do our best to keep the app working at all times, but cannot guarantee that it is available without interruption or errors, for example during maintenance, outages at service providers or without an internet connection. We continue to develop the app and may change functions as long as the core of the paid service is maintained.
9. Liability
We are liable without limitation for intent and gross negligence, for injury to life, body or health and under the German Product Liability Act. In cases of slight negligence we are only liable if we breach an essential contractual obligation (an obligation whose fulfilment makes the proper use of the app possible in the first place and on whose compliance you may regularly rely); liability is then limited to the foreseeable damage typical for this kind of contract. Otherwise liability is excluded as far as permitted by German law.
10. Applicable law
German law applies, excluding the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. If you are a consumer with your habitual residence in another country, you keep the protection of the mandatory provisions of that country.
11. Changes to these terms
We may change these terms for the future, for example if the app, the prices or the law change. We will inform you of significant changes in good time in the app or on this website. If you do not agree, you can stop using the app and cancel a subscription.
