What does the letter mean?
Bafög is state support for school and university. The notice states the amount per month and the approval period (Bewilligungszeitraum), usually twelve months. The amount depends on your needs and on how much income and assets you and your parents have.
During university studies, half is paid as a grant that you do not have to pay back. The other half is an interest‑free loan. You only repay it years after the support ends, and there is an upper limit for the repayment.
You have duties: you must report changes in income, assets and studies. After a few semesters, proof of academic progress may be required, otherwise the support is reduced or stopped.
Deadlines
- Objection (Widerspruch): within one month after notification, in writing or recorded at the office.
- Continued support: submit the follow‑up application, if possible, two months before the approval period ends, so that the payment does not stop.
- Report changes: immediately, not only at the next application.
What you can do
- Check the period, the amount and your details in the notice. Are your parents' income and assets correct?
- If something is wrong, file an objection in writing before the one‑month deadline ends. Keep the proof that it arrived.
- Enter the end of the approval period in your calendar and submit the follow‑up application early.
- Report changes in a side job, assets, place of residence or course of study immediately. Bafög paid too much is claimed back.
- If you have questions, ask the student financing office, the student services organisation (Studierendenwerk) or your university’s advice service.
